New Interview: John 5 takes on DJs, computer music

Musicradar.com sits down with John 5 again for another interview in the run- up to the new album God Told Me To:

Interview: BossoIf anybody embodies the spirit of the saying, ‘Dare To Be Different,’ it’s John 5. With his horror movie makeup, a resume that boasts names as disparate as k.d. lang, Ricky Martin, Lynyrd Skynrd and Rob Zombie, and a unique playing style that’s more than a little bit country and a whole lot rock ‘n’ roll, the Telecaster-toting Mr. 5 is certainly his own man.

5 takes a typically broad approach on his new album, Gold Told Me To (due out on 8 May), which artfully mixes various shades of genres (industrial metal, dance rock, Spanish-style flamenco) in a strikingly bold manner: half of the record is acoustic, half is electric. (more…)

John 5 on Van Halen’s new record: “It’s amazing!”

Guitar star covers Beat it on upcoming CD. Joe Bosso, Thu 1 Mar 2012, 11:02 pm UTC

On his upcoming album, God Told Me To, guitarist John 5 covers Michael Jackson’s Beat It – and does a spot-on rendition of Eddie Van Halen’s famous solo. “It’s one of the most incredible leads ever,” he admits. “For me to play it any other way would have been wrong somehow. A solo like that, you have to do it perfectly.”

As it turns out, John 5 has ties to Van Halen – he wrote and recorded with David Lee Roth in the late ’90s – and on the subject of the band’s new album, A Different Kind Of Truth, he’s quick to sing its praises. “It’s amazing!” he enthuses. (more…)

Musicradar.com interview: John 5 talks guitar solos

MusicRadar caught up with 5 during his recent UK tour with Rob Zombie, in support of the Hellbilly Deluxe 2 record, to talk guitar solos.

INTERVIEW: John 5 talks guitar solos

Ed Mitchell, Thu 3 Mar 2011, 11:50 am UTC

Ghostfaced shredder John 5 (born John William Lowery) has proved his soloing abilities with a series of instrumental guitar albums; sideman duties with the likes of Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie and David Lee Roth; and session gigs with artists as diverse as Ricky Martin and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Telecaster addict 5 is obviously a hugely adaptable player but he has two distinct personalities as a musician that mark him out from most other rock guitarists. One is his role as a blisteringly fast metal bruiser; the other, a gifted country/bluegrass picker.

MusicRadar caught up with 5 during his recent UK tour with Rob Zombie, in support of the Hellbilly Deluxe 2 record, to talk guitar solos. That is, playing solos and feeling their influence. Speaking of the latter, it turns out that John got his first taste of rock soloing courtesy of a stone cold classic…

“I was such a big Kiss and Van Halen fan, Yngwie Malmsteen, Racer X… all that stuff,” says John. “I loved everybody. I just love music and great guitar players. But the first solo I can remember that I was like, ‘wow, this is awesome’ was Heartbreaker by Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin II, 1969).

“I remember it was so difficult because I was so little and it was such a stretch. I probably learned it when I was 11. Well, I didn’t learn the whole thing just… (sings the first few notes).”

“I thought to myself, there’s already an Yngwie, an Eddie Van Halen and a Steve Vai. How am I going to be different from these players?”

As it happens, the pre-pubescent 5 wasn’t the only shredder in the making who fell under the spell of Page’s legendary improvised solo. Back in 1998, Steve Vai told Guitar World magazine that Heartbreaker had ‘the biggest impact on him’ when he was a kid. “It was defiant, bold, and edgier than hell. It really is the definitive rock guitar solo.” (more…)

John 5 interviewed ahead of the Soundwave 2011 Festival

In the run up to the Soundwave 2011 tour next year, John 5 sat down with Annie from the Soundwave website to chat: www.soundwavefestival.com/news/exclusive-interview-john-5-rob-zombie
Best known under his stage name John 5, most music fans would be familiar with John Lowery’s signature guitar work with shock rocker Marilyn Manson and more recently metal’s favourite hellbilly Rob Zombie. Picking up his first guitar at age seven, Lowery was always destined for a life revolving around Rock n Roll. With a career spanning more than twenty years Lowery’s released five solo albums and has worked with the who’s who of the music industry including rock royalty such as Paul Stanley, David Lee Roth, The Scorpions and Rob Halford. In 1996 John auditioned and outplayed more than 200 guitarists for a spot in country pop singer KD Lang’s touring band, a position that would see John tour Australia for the first time, three years later he would return to our shores with the outrageous and outspoken Marilyn Manson. Now Australian fans are gearing up for John’s return to Australia this coming February for the highly anticipated and explosive spectacle with Rob Zombie.

2010 has been a busy year for this shredding extraordinaire who has spent most of his time on the road with Rob Zombie touring on the chart topping ‘Hellbilly Deluxe II’, a return to roots album for Zombie which featured the singles ‘What’, ‘Sick Bubblegum’ and ‘Mars Needs Women’. In between touring cycles John found the time to release his fifth solo album ‘The Art of Malice’ an album which showcases some of the finest finger work and blistering techniques ever recorded. After listening to John’s latest offering it’s easy to see why Lowery’s classed as one of the worlds’s leading and most sought after guitar players.

I recently caught up with John 5 to discuss his latest solo album ‘The Art of Malice’ and the recording of ‘Hellbilly Deluxe II’, we also spoke about the upcoming Rob Zombie shows set to hit Australia in February as well as John’s work alongside some of the industry’s finest. Kick back as ‘The Nightmare Unravels’ with one of the world’s finest shredders… John 5 (more…)

CD: The Art of Malice
Record Label: Rocket Science
by Tina Hall
August 2010

John 5 is best known for his work as former guitarist for Marilyn Manson and also as guitarist for Rob Zombie. He has one of the most impressive resumes in rock having working with artists like, K.D Lang, Lita Ford, Meatloaf, David Lee Roth, Salt-N-Pepa, and Lynyrd Skynyrd. His latest solo effort is titled “The Art of Malice.” I sat down with him recently to talk music and what he would most like to do otherwise.

Maximum Ink: If you dont mind asking, how did the stage name John 5 come about?
John 5: I became John 5 when I joined Marilyn Manson. He dubbed me that because I was the 5th member to join the group, and yeah, it does have a biblical reference too.

MI:
You profess to have an ardent love of Bluegrass. Can you tell us a little about that and why you love it so much?
J5: The reason I love it is it s a different style of playing guitar all together. I enjoy playing different styles. It keeps me entertained and isn’t the same thing over & over. It’s a lot of fun playing country and bluegrass. Chicken picking, banjo rules, double stops, and nice country bends. It’s all very different from rock. The style of playing is fun to experiment with. (more…)
