John 5 Signature™ Cable

John 5 defies convention. He is a master of styles ranging from shred metal to bluegrass, and his gear has to meet or exceed the extreme demands of his performance. Enter the new DiMarzio® John 5 Signature™ Guitar Cable, developed to satisfy John 5.

DiMarzio’s new John 5 Signature™ Cable is double-shielded to reduce hum, interference and stage noise while extending the frequency response ? something that’s pretty important to John 5. The reduced capacitance cable is encased in a black braided jacket that protects the cable from damage and features custom-designed DiMarzio/Switchcraft plugs. An extra-long, aged copper-patina barrel engraved with John 5’s logo provides exceptional strain relief as well as style.

D Activator™ Bridge DP200

“I didn’t think my Telecaster could sound any better until I met Mr. DiMarzio.”

The D Activator™ Bridge has an enriched harmonic quality and the notes want to sing. Both the D Activator™ Neck and Bridge pickups were designed to eliminate the sterile edginess commonly associated with active pickups. The D Activator™ Bridge pickup is about 25% louder than the D Activator™ Neck. Since we were developing both pickups as a set from the ground up, we adjusted the volume levels on the pickups so they are balanced. That way when you switch from the neck to the bridge, you don’t hear a drop in volume – also a frequent problem with active pickups. And they don’t use batteries.

Recommended For: Bridge

Tech Talk: An interesting fact about the most popular active bridge pickups is that they aren’t incredibly loud. Instead, they have a strong, focused attack that hits the amp very hard and makes them ?feel’ more powerful than they actually spec out to be. This is an important characteristic that we needed to capture with the D Activator™ bridge pickup. We also wanted to avoid the limiting effect that can occur with active pickups when they are played hard. Our pickup is passive with a lot of headroom, and it responds quickly and accurately to changes in pick attack. A hard pick attack doesn’t cause the signal to flatten out, and picking more softly or rolling the volume control down lets the sound clean up naturally. Like all passive pickups, D Activators™ require controls with a minimum value of 250Kohms. 500K is the standard all around value, and our 1Megohm tone control is best for long cable runs.

Squier J5 Telecaster® Guitar

John 5 is a self-described “Fender® fanatic” with a jaw-dropping collection of his favorite instrument, the Telecaster® (“the greatest guitars ever built, by far,” in his words). His Squier signature model, the J5 Telecaster, is a double-bound beauty based on his oft-modded workhorse Telecaster, which was pieced together at the Fender Custom Shop.

Features include John 5’s distinctive black-and- chrome look—a double-bound alder body with a gloss black polyester finish, a polished stainless steel pickguard and chrome hardware. The one-piece maple neck has a modern C shape, a matching black Telecaster headstock and a 12”-radius rosewood fingerboard with 22 medium jumbo frets.

The custom-designed humbucking pickups use a special dual-volume setup with the bridge pickup control in the front position and the neck pickup control in the back position (5 prefers this setup because he spends much time giving the bridge pickup a workout). Rapid toggling the upper-bout three-way pickup switch gives you 5’s signature “kill” effect by turning off the neck pickup volume and leaving the bridge control full up.
