John 5 shares with Classic Rock Magazine the guitar albums that influenced, inspired and moved him. The list which includes Van Halen, Yngwie Malmsteen and Joe Maphis are the albums that as John explains “….really inspired me and challenged the way I think about the guitar“.
John 5, as many fans will know has had an eclectic career, working across many genres, with many different kinds of artists. It therefore makes sense when he explains to Classic Rock about his music tastes; “I just love diversity….I guess I get bored easily. Don’t just give me the same thing all the time – mix it up.” This holds true for John’s taste in guitar albums: “A great guitar album has to have diversity,” he says. “If I’m going to listen to a record from start to finish, I need somebody to take me on a journey. Bring me on an adventure. If you can do that, you’re more than a great guitar player – you’re a musician.”

As part of MusicRadar’s 30 day guitar challenge, John 5 shares his own guest lesson including string-skipped arpeggios and tapping in both rhythm and lead playing.
“This month, John takes us through his approaches to quintessential rock techniques string skipping and tapping. His speed is utterly ferocious at times, but we’d urge you to stick with the lesson even if up-tempo playing isn’t your bag.
All of John’s examples in this month’s video lesson can be distilled down to simple ideas, each less than a bar of music in length, which can then be moved around the fretboard to create more sophisticated licks. Focusing on these basic ideas will help you to put together your own more advanced creations.“
The lessons have previously been shared via Total Guitar but MusicRadar have compiled a series of lessons plus musical sheets and write-ups. To watch the video lessons, and find out more, click >>> (more…)

A new documentary called “Hired Gun” is currently in post production. “Hired Gun is a compelling film about a unique fraternity of musicians that possess uncommon musical ability, but who made a conscious decision to make a living playing music in relative obscurity. Occasionally, one of them makes the big time and becomes a star in their own right.”
