JOHN 5 \u2013 \u201cBeing A Rock Star Was Never The Idea\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>By Aaron Small\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Best known as the former guitarist for MARILYN MANSON and current axe slinger for ROB ZOMBIE, JOHN 5 has also lent his talents to LITA FORD, ROB HALFORD, DAVID LEE ROTH, PAUL STANLEY, LYNYRD SKYNYRD , and a myriad of other big name artists since moving from Michigan to California at the age of 18. In addition to raising the stock of whoever he works with, John has also become quite an accomplished solo instrumentalist, and will release his sixth album, God Told Me To, on May 8th.<\/div>\n

In addition to the ten-song CD, God Told Me To, comes with a nearly hour-long bonus DVD, hosted by retro-style horror-host Mike Odd. \u201cThis one was a lot of hard work, especially with the DVD being with it,\u201d admits 5. \u201cI put a whole lot of time and effort into it; not that I didn\u2019t do that with the others, but I just kind of took my time.\u201d How much time are we talking about? \u201cProbably a year and a half, cause I had to tour with Zombie and all that stuff, so I was doing it while I was on the road as well. I really thought about things, and thought about the title of the album and titles of the songs, the production\u2026 I wasn\u2019t in a rush to get it out superfast.\u201dJohn\u2019s new album shares its title, God Told Me To, with a horror movie from 1976 that was written and directed by Larry Cohen. The plot centres on a Catholic, New York police detective investigating several murders committed by various random and apparently normal people; all claiming that God told them to kill. In fact, clips from that film can be seen on the bonus DVD. John elaborates on the correlation. \u201cWell, when I was a kid, there was this serial killer in Michigan, and he blamed a lot of his stuff on God, saying God would talk to him, and that would always scare me. So I was always intrigued by that, is this guy really hearing voices in his head? So I did a spin on it \u2013 and this is true. I took it as a positive because I wanted to be a musician so bad, a working musician, that the very few times I did go to Church, like at Christmas, midnight mass or whatever, I would always pray, \u2018please, I just want to become a working musician, a guitar player,\u2019 and blah, blah, blah. Being a rock star was never the idea; it was so far-fetched. So that\u2019s why I named it God Told Me To.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
