Shock Therapy. They may have outlawed it long ago in the medical profession, but it\u2019s still in use in the music biz to this day. How else can you explain artists like Lady Gaga or Miley Cyrus, or \u2013 switching over to the metal genre, and going back a few years — Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie?<\/p>\n

Weird, crazy, totally gonzo-insane — maybe so — but if you let that kind of stuff run you off, you\u2019d never realize what an amazing, virtuosic guitarist those two shock-artists have shared in Detroit-born John Lowery, aka, John 5.<\/p>\n

On his new solo disc,\u00a0Careful With That Axe<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 his\u00a0sixth<\/em>in the past decade \u2013 the 43-year-old guitarist showcases simply\u00a0immense\u00a0<\/em>fretboard talent. Over 10 cuts on\u00a0Careful…<\/em>John tears it up not only over the metal grooves you would expect from a guy who routinely shaves his eyebrows and paints his face like a psychotic clown, but also in a completely authentic, and completely mind-blowing display of hot country pickin\u2019 as well. Yeah, shred-metal, and shred-country. Together. On the same disc. And it ain\u2019t his first time at this rodeo either. You just gotta hear it.<\/p>\n

John has spent most of the past decade recording and touring with Zombie, and before that played simultaneously with both Marilyn Manson and David Lee Roth for a five-plus years, and on a couple of albums. But you\u2019ve also heard him on records such as Lynyrd Skynyrd\u2019s\u00a0God & Guns\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Last of a Dyin’ Breed,\u00a0<\/em>and songs by Scorpions, Garbage, Ricky Martin, and k.d. lang — to mention just a few. It\u2019s no surprise that a player this good gets a lot of calls for session work, and he takes it all very seriously.<\/p>\n

In this exclusive Guitar.com interview we talk all about his country pickin\u2019, his love of Speedy West and Jimmy Bryant, and his sessions with \u2013 and hilarious first meeting with \u2013 Rock And Roll Hall of Famer\u2019s Lynyrd Skynyrd. John also touches on his movie-soundtrack work with Rob Zombie, his wild collection of Telecasters, and all his favorite gear.<\/p>\n

John 5:<\/strong> Ahhh\u2026 I\u2019m in Paso Robles,\u00a0California. It\u2019s beautiful; I\u2019m loving it. The weather: amazing. I love playing in\u00a0California\u00a0because it\u2019s so close to home. We\u2019re just doing it today.<\/p>\n

Guitar.com:<\/strong> That whole area is amazing \u2013 Paso Robles,\u00a0San Luis Obispo,\u00a0Morro Bay. Have you ever been over to the coast, by\u00a0Hearst Castle, to see the thousands of elephant seals laying on the beach?<\/p>\n

John 5:<\/strong> Yes, I have. How cool is that? And they\u2019re just laying there. They\u2019re like the size of Volkswagens.<\/p>\n

Guitar.com:<\/strong> So who are you playing with tonight?<\/p>\n

John 5:<\/strong> It\u2019s a Rob Zombie show.<\/p>\n

Guitar.com:<\/strong> So this new disc of yours \u2013 just amazing guitar playing, as always.<\/p>\n

John 5:<\/strong> Thank you very much. I appreciate it.<\/p>\n

Guitar.com:<\/strong> I am always amazed, and I was since the first time I heard you do some solo stuff with the\u00a0Vertigo<\/em>\u00a0album back in 2004, at your country picking.<\/p>\n

John 5:<\/strong> That\u2019s why I did it. A lot of people enjoy the country picking, because they don\u2019t hear it all the time. Whenever an instrumental thing comes out, we know what it\u2019s going to sound like. But I really enjoy playing like that, and I promised myself when I first did it, \u201cI\u2019m gonna do some country picking on here. I don\u2019t know if anybody will like it, but I\u2019m gonna do it, and see what happens.\u201d And people really enjoy it.<\/p>\n
