[Interview] John 5 speaks to the Illinois Entertainer

John 5 Illinois Entertainer

John 5 Illinois Entertainer

John 5 and The Creatures recently visited Reggies in Chicago for their Season of the Witch tour. Before the show, John 5 chatted to the Illinois Entertainer.

From the Illinois Entertainer:

Aside from his day job as Rob Zombie’s right hand man, Mr. 5 explores his adventurous musical side on Witch. The music videos 5 has released throughout 2016 also appear on the album; a technique Metallica executed successfully last year as well. With the surge of music videos breaking singles online, 5’s plan was to get his music on the screens of the fans before the album dropped.”

John 5: Wired and Inspired with Premier Guitar

John 5 Premier Guitar

John 5 Premier Guitar

On May 15th John 5 will be the featured cover star of Premier Guitar magazine. Before that he took part in the magazine’s Wired and Inspired feature.

From Premier Guitar:

John 5 uses his solo albums to showcase his mastery of diverse styles, although his standout non-metal style is country. He’s as comfortable fingerpicking, mimicking a banjo, and executing complex chord/melody arrangements as he is doing sliding arpeggios, sweep picking, and 7-finger tapping. That versatility has served him well. In addition to metal, his curriculum vitae includes recordings and tours with such diverse artists as k.d. lang, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rod Stewart, and Meat Loaf.

We spoke with John 5 about his roots, practice techniques, learning disparate styles of music, using less distortion to get heavier tones, and how he created some of the crazier sounds on Season of the Witch. As you’ll see reading this interview, John 5’s excitement is contagious. He’s an amazing guitarist, but an even more inspiring person.”

[Interview] “Just a man and his guitar”: John 5 talks to Fangoria

John 5 interview Fangoria

John 5 interview Fangoria

The Season of the Witch tour came to an end just under a week ago but during that time, John 5 chatted to the legendary Fangoria.

From Fangoria:

Known for his dark persona and wicked riffs on stage, off-stage the well-spoken and passionate artist is more than just a man in monster make-up. Eclectic in his love of music, John 5 has taken instrumental story telling to an entirely new level in SEASON OF THE WITCH. Tracks such as HOW TO MAKE A MONSTER, HERE’S TO THE CRAZY ONES, and the hypnotic BEHIND THE NUT LOVE are just three examples of the diversity and talent it took in creating this album. Now, as the tour comes to a close and John 5 prepares to hit the road with Zombie, Fango was lucky enough to be invited to one of his performances.

More than happy to sit down and talk shop, John 5 opened up to Fango and gave us a behind-the-scenes look at the concert and why he does what he does.

[Interview] Port City Daily interviews John 5: ” I love the stage experience. I love playing music with people really close up.”

On April 1st, John 5 and The Creatures will be playing at Calico in Wilmington NC. Ahead of that show the Port City Daily caught up with The Creatures “from the road to talk about their tour, the new album and visiting North Carolina again.”

But I love the stage experience. I love playing music with people really close up. I do enjoy playing in front of the crowds with the Rob stage, but the front row is 50 feet away sometimes. In a small show, I can put my head down and it can rest on someone’s head. Those are cool things. I love that stuff.

Because when I was a kid, I would go so people that were in major bands that were playing tiny shows, in small clubs. And I will never, ever forget those shows.

It’s a lot of fun. There’s a little something for everybody. That’s just who I am—I love all these different styles of music. And it’s from the heart. I think fans really latch onto that.”

He also talks about why he is comfortable playing the smaller venues on this tour: “Maybe because I have the best of both worlds, but I don’t really mind playing small venues,” he says. “When I was growing up, I would go see major artists in small clubs in Hollywood. They would get together and go play. I always thought that was so special and such a cool experience. I just love playing and I love having a guitar in my hands.”

[Review] Media Mike calls Season of the Witch John 5’s “most diverse solo effort to date”.

John 5 Season of the Witch

John 5 Season of the Witch

It has been TWO weeks since Season of the Witch, the brand new album from John 5 and The Creatures, was released. The feedback from fans and reviewers has been fantastic.

Media Mike gives the album a 4 out of 5 review calling the album John 5’s “most diverse“.

Don’t let the albums brief runtime fool you as John 5 and the Creatures pack every ounce of musicality they can in to each and every second of “Season of the Witch”. Easily his most diverse solo effort to date John 5 showcases his ability and diverse tastes by blending country, funk, rock and metal with his love for the macabre into one cohesive package that provides listeners with something new each time you listen.”

[Review] John 5 and The Creatures slay the DNA Lounge

John 5 and The Creatures DNA Lounge Elizabeth Tour photo

John 5 and The Creatures are currently on tour in support of their new album Season of the Witch, which came out on March 3rd.

Over the weekend, the band played at the DNA Lounge in San Francisco and SF Sonic were there to watch and review the show.

Making his way to the stage through the tightly compacted smaller venue at DNA, John 5 instantly generated an auditory tornado of extremely fast finger tapping and incredible super sweeps with a new song, “Guitars, Tits & Monsters.” The pale, painted, grim axeman stuns with his limitless capabilities for capturing every maneuver possible and with a diverse array of guitars to do so with his main rig being the very sleek signature Squire, the great golden J5 Telecaster perfectly equipped with the well-used secret weapon of the kill switch.”

[Review] Season of the Witch is “a record that you will marvel at for a long time to come”.

John 5 Season of the Witch

John 5 Season of the Witch

A 5 out of 5 Devils Horns rating from Mike’s Music and Concert Blog for the brand new John 5 and The Creatures album Season of the Witch.

There is literally something for everyone here, from searing metal to country/bluegrass. I can’t imagine a record with more variety and crossed-genres than this one. The lack of vocals really allows you to focus on the mayhem unfolding. Make no mistake, this is a true labor of love. You can hear it in every note.”

[REVIEW] Metal Assault gives Season of the Witch a 10 out of 10 rating!

John 5 Season of the Witch

John 5 Season of the Witch

The team at Metal Assault have listened to the brand new John 5 and The Creatures album Season of the Witch which came out last Friday (3/3) and given it an outstanding TEN out of TEN rating!

‘Season of the Witch’ isn’t just a showing of John 5’s technical skill from first track to last, it gives insight to how truly diverse John 5 can be when stretching his writing muscle. You’d probably think you’re getting a typical heavy metal side project just from the packaging of this record; it’s a John 5 record called ‘Season of the Witch’ that gives you every indication it will not go in the direction it takes.”

John 5 and The Creatures played the second show of the Season of the Witch tour at Tony V’s Garage in Everett, WA. Yesterdaze News were there to watch and gave this review:

The show was one killer guitar lick after another accompanied by wardrobe/accessory changes and of course multiple axe changes through out the show. There were many styles of guitars, each suited to the perfect song and a fun theatrical experience that comes from a John 5 show. There were lights, co2 cannons, masks, fog, light up guitars, a lava liquid filled guitar, tiny ones and banjo styles.”

John 5 Creatures Louie G's

KISW Rock – 99.9 FM’s “Iron” Mike Savoia was at the opening night of the John 5 and The Creatures Season of the Witch tour which took place at Louie G’s in Fife, WA and gave this fantastic review of the 15 song set show:

Blasting through a 15 song set covering much of his solo catalog including a guitar solo, John 5 and the Creatures (Ian Ross on Bass, Logan Nix on Drums) were on fire the whole night jamming incredible complicated yet tasty ear sounds that kept you interested and not bored to a bunch of guys instrument wanking. These were instrumental rock greats.”

[Review] Cryptic Rock gives Season of the Witch 4.5 out of 5

John 5 Matt Wilson Images

John 5 Matt Wilson Images

A fantastic 4.5 out of 5 review of the latest John 5 album Season of the Witch, released on March 3 2017.

From Cryptic Rock: “Those familiar with John 5’s previous offerings, there is no mistaking his guitar playing for anyone else, meaning he is simply one of a kind. His current team consisting of Ian Ross on bass and Rodger Carter on drums are also very crucial to the all instrumental album. This is especially true for Ross as the bassist, who provides a special dynamic of deep heavy bass jamming that complements John 5’s playing in just the right way. The drumming of Carter also completes the versatile musical range of John 5, going from Bluegrass, to Industrial, to Western Swing, to Rock, and back again. This is all accomplished in a very refreshing intensity on Season Of The Witch.”
